Dartington kicks off the season
The stylish victory of Dartington delivered the first success of the season for Marcus Tregoning at Lingfield on Saturday evening in the colours of his breeder Guy Brook. A big, scopey colt by Siyouni, he looked a horse to follow as he readily defied an opening BHA mark of 65 on his handicap debut over a mile in the hands of Martin Dwyer.
There was support throughout the day for Dartington and his backers were on good terms with themselves from the moment he stormed into the lead over two furlong out before coming home comfortably ahead of Treaty of Dingle. The winner had shown promise in three starts early this year and will certainly get further than a mile in time.
His trainer revealed afterwards that Dartington had been so full of himself on Saturday morning that he gave him two canters first thing. “He’s one we like, he has a lovely action, is a sound horse and I am hoping he can improve on that and can give Guy a lot of fun”, he reflected.
Tregoning knows the family well as he won three races with Dartington’s dam Secret Pursuit including a Listed event at Saint Cloud. He added that Sheikh Hamdan’s classy coltis on course for Royal Ascot where he has a choice of engagements. “He looks a picture, is working nicely and moving extremely well which is encouraging after the serious injury he incurred shortly after his success in the Greenham”, said Tregoning.
