STYLISH VICTORY FOR SPANISH BLAZE AT SANDOWN
Spanish Blaze overcame a tardy start before gaining his second win of the season with a stylish victory in his first nursery at Sandown on Saturday off an opening mark of 76.
Success didn’t look likely as he trailed the field for the first couple of furlongs fully a dozen lengths behind the leaders.
But Trevor Whelan gave him time to find his feet and then took the brave man’s route towards the inside as the race began in earnest.
Spanish Blaze quickened smartly through the pack, eased to the front over a furlong out and kept on strongly despite appearing to idle in the closing stages.
At the line he had one and a quarter lengths to spare over the runner up Rating.
It was an undeniably impressive triumph by a colt who races in the colours of Whitsbury IV.
“He’s very progressive, has a good attitude, is still a bit immature, has a lot of learning to do and could be a very nice horse. Obviously he has gears and Trevor really likes him”, said Marcus Tregoning.
“Spanish Blaze missed the break because he was chatting to the horse next door but he was able to make up the lost ground and will come on strides.”
Tregoning hinted that he might run once more this season, quite possibly in another nursery.
